Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock were a hip hopduo from Harlem, New York who were best known for their hit "It Takes Two", a single that was a top 40 hit and has been certified platinum by the RIAA. That song was a part of the duo's album of the same name, which also has been certified platinum. They are also known for being pioneers of the crossover success that rap music would have in the popular music mainstream.[1] The duo consisted of Rob Base (Robert Ginyard, born May 18, 1967) and DJ E-Z Rock (Rodney "Skip" Bryce, born 1967[citation needed]; died April 27, 2014).

Nirvana was an American rock band formed by singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. Nirvana went through a succession of drummers, the longest-lasting being Dave Grohl, who joined in 1990. Despite releasing only three full-length studio albums in their seven-year career, Nirvana has come to be regarded as one of the most influential and important alternative bands in history. Though the band dissolved in 1994 after the death of Cobain, their music maintains a popular following and continues to influence modern rock and roll culture.

In the late 1980s, Nirvana established itself as part of the Seattlegrunge scene, releasing its first album, Bleach, for the independent record labelSub Pop in 1989. They developed a sound that relied on dynamic contrasts, often between quiet verses and loud, heavy choruses. After signing to major label DGC R…

5 Pointz Developer Who Whitewashed Artists' Murals Forced to Pay Them $6.7 Million

Image
By Katherine McGrath, ArchitecturalDigest

Justice has finally been served to New York real estate developer Gerald Wolkoff, marking the end to a long, dramatic landmark case surrounding onetime graffiti mecca 5 Pointz. On Monday, Judge Frederic Block ordered Wolkoff to pay a collective $6.7 million to the 21 graffiti artists whose work he whitewashed in 2013, or $150,000 for each of the 45 murals he destroyed. The decision, which awarded maximum damages possible to the artists, had been a long time coming, making its victory for the creators and their community that much sweeter.

5 Pointz was an open-air graffiti museum of sorts—a massive, abandoned warehouse that spanned the length of a city block in Long Island City, Queens. Beginning in the '90s, spray artists came from all over the world to create their art on the ever-evolving walls, and it served to elevate and legitimize the craft, which for so long was seen as on unequal footing with other mediums such as pain…

Man Who Says He's Homeless Had Large Amount of Heroin

By AP

A man who told authorities he lives in a shelter is facing drug and gun charges after police say they found as much as $800,000 worth of heroin in two Springfield apartments.

Arquelio Cajigas was held on $250,000 bail after pleading not guilty Wednesday to charges including heroin possession and illegal possession of a gun.

Police say they found approximately $35,000 and a 9 mm handgun Tuesday in one of the apartments.

At another apartment, detectives found 816 grams of uncut heroin, enough for 80,000 bags with a street value of $400,000 to $800,000.

Prosecutors asked for $500,000 bail saying the 44-year-old Cajigas is a "career drug dealer."

A defense attorney request saying $25,000 bail, saying his client is of limited means and cooperated fully in the police investigation.

Woman Forcibly Dragged From Legislature Meeting For Reading List Of Reps’ Campaign Donors

Lissa Lucas, a West Virginia resident that is running for the state’s House of Delegates, was recently dragged out of a public hearing for having the audacity to read a list of corporate campaign donors who contributed to the House members that were holding the hearing. The elected officials didn’t want to hear the truth, and they certainly didn’t want those names to be on the public record of their hearing, so they cut off Lissa’s microphone and had security escort her out. Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins discusses what happened.

San Francisco General Strike

Image
San Francisco General Strike

The 1934 general strike in San Francisco brought activity in the city to a standstill.

The 1934 West Coast Waterfront Strike (also known as the 1934 West Coast Longshoremen's Strike, as well as a number of variations on these names) lasted eighty-three days, triggered by sailors and a four-day general strike in San Francisco, and led to the unionization of all of the West Coast ports of the United States.

The San Francisco General Strike, along with the 1934 Toledo Auto-Lite Strike led by the American Workers Party and the Minneapolis Teamsters Strike of 1934 led by the Communist League of America, were important catalysts for the rise of industrial unionism in the 1930s, much of which was organized through the Congress of Industrial Organizations.

Seattle General Strike 1919

Seattle General Strike 1919

This is an excerpt from Witness to Revolution: The Story of Anna Louis Strong contains original film footage from 1919, the only known footage of the strike. Produced and directed by Lucy Ostrander.

The excerpt is part of an award-winning documentary film biography of Anna Louise Strong, Seattle's most famous radical. The General Strike began February 6 and ended February 11, 1919. It was called to support the shipyard workers demands for higher wages after a World War I ended.

The shipyard workers were represented by different crafts that composed a "Metal Trades Council" that had been on strike since January 21, 1919.

The Seattle Central Labor Council called the General Strike in support of the Metal Trades unions.

The strike ultimately failed and many labor leaders were jailed and the only labor newspaper in Seattle was shut down.

General Strike 1926

Image
General Strike 1926

After full employment during the 1914-1918 War, the 1920s brought a return to high unemployment. It didn't suit those with capital to employ workers so the feeling of betrayal along with hunger and misery prevailed. Protest marches were organised and people started to vote for Union-backed candidates for Government. In 1924 the first Labour Prime Minister, Ramsay MacDonald, came to power but the compromises he made to work within the capitalist economy prevented any socialist progress. The Government collapsed in 1925 and the Conservatives came back into power and ordered a reduction in wages along with a threat to issue weapons to selected anti-strike civilians.

Events take place in various locations across Great Britain during General Strike.

San Francisco to open nation’s first heroin injection sites

Image
By CNNWire

The San Francisco Department of Public Health has unanimously endorsed a task force’s recommendation to open what could become the nation’s first legal safe injection sites aimed at curbing the opioid epidemic.

The facilities provide a safe space where people can consume previously obtained drugs, such as heroin and fentanyl, under the supervision of staff trained to respond in the event of an overdose or other medical emergency. They also provide counseling and referrals to other social and health services.

Although the often-controversial facilities are not an ideal solution, they are a necessity in light of the skyrocketing number of deaths caused by opioid overdose in the United States, according to San Francisco Mayor Mark Farrell.

“I understand the misgivings around it and some of the rhetoric from people who don’t support it,” Farrell said last week. “But we absolutely need to give it a try.”

More than 63,000 people in the US died from drug overdose in 20…

Drug Testing on Beagles

Drug Testing on Beagles

For six months, a PETA undercover investigator worked in an Ohio lab where beagles were force-fed Oxycontin, a drug that had already been tested on animals and had been on the market in the U.S. for decades. The tests were conducted ostensibly to satisfy Japanese regulatory requirements. This case led to PETA's involvement in the International Conference on Harmonization, which works to streamline regulatory requirements for drug testing.

If you've ever shopped at Whole Foods, you may have seen signs posted in the meat department that say things like "enriched environment" and "treated humanely." But the conditions documented by a PETA investigator on a Pennsylvania pig farm that supplies Whole Foods reveal that these signs are probably worth less than the recycled paper they're printed on.

PetSmart's back rooms are off-limits to customers, and that's where the company hides away the immense suffering of the tiniest companion animals. Drug War Profiteers: Book Exposes How Wachovia Bank Laundered Millions For Mexican Cartels

Drug War Profiteers: Book Exposes How Wachovia Bank Laundered Millions For Mexican Cartels

As protests continue against Wall Street and the nation's biggest banks, Democracy Now! speaks to British journalist Ed Vulliamy, author of "Amexica: War Along the Borderline."

Vulliamy exposes how one bank, Wachovia, made millions in the Mexican drug war. At the time, Wachovia was the nation's fourth-largest bank — it has since been taken over by Wells Fargo.

"You can't drive around Mexico with hundreds of billions of dollars in cash in a truck. It has to be banked," Vulliamy said. "What I found was that it is coming into the United States, into the banking system."
